What is Onam and why is it celebrated?
King Mahabali
As per Wiki, Onam commemorates Vamana means the fifth avatar of Hindu god Vishnu and the generous but egotistical daitya king Mahabali. According to the Hindu legends, after Indra (the king of the devas) is defeated by Mahabali (the king of the asuras), the devas ultimately seek refuge in Vishnu, who agrees to restore Indra to power.
Seeking refuge, the devas turned to Vishnu, who incarnated as a dwarf priest named Vamana. Mahabali conducted a ritual prayer attended by Vamana, who requested only three feet of land. Despite sage Shukra warning him about Vamana’s divine nature, Mahabali agreed. Vamana then grew in size, covering the entire universe in three strides. The three worlds were restored to Indra, and Mahabali was banished to the netherworld. However, due to Mahabali’s love for his subjects, Vamana granted him the wish to visit his kingdom once a year.
Harvest and End of Monsoon:
Onam festival inform that its the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of harvest. This is the occasion when farmers reap the rewards of their hard work, and the lush green landscape of Kerala comes alive.
